BCHL Today: Trades heat up ahead of deadline day, Kings defenceman Garrett commits to Colgate, and BCHL Trade Tracker updated

Express and Warriors hook up on big trade

The Coquitlam Express added another experienced piece to its blueline on Thursday, picking up defenceman Wyatt Head from West Kelowna for defenceman Addison Macey and future considerations. Head, who started the season at Quinnipiac University, didn’t see any games at the NCAA level and returned to West Kelowna last month. He had a goal and five assists in seven games with the Warriors this season.

Macey, who’s in his first BCHL season, had eight assists in 32 games with the Express.

Surrey makes moves in goal

The Surrey Eagles made a move in net, acquiring goaltender Reece Klassen from the Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the AJHL for future considerations.

Klassen, 20, was with the Swift Current Broncos of the WHL, where he posted a 1-7-1 record with a 5.13 GAA and an .878 SV% this season. He is a veteran of 71 WHL games with the Broncos, Spokane Chiefs and Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Klassen last played junior A hockey in 2017-18 with the Lloydminster Bobcats of the AJHL, going 2-2 with a 2.66 GAA and a .920 SV%. He is from Surrey, so he’ll get to play out his junior eligibility with his hometown team.

As a result of adding Klassen, the Eagles traded goaltender Cal Schell to Flin Flon of the SJHL for future considerations. In 14 games with Surrey this season, the 18-year-old had a 4-9-1 record with a 3.76 GAA and a .892 SV%.

Langley and Powell River swap forwards

The Powell River Kings and Langley Rivermen swapped forwards late Thursday afternoon. The Kings receive 20-year-old forward Devin Leduc while the Riv get 19-year-old forward Hunter McCoy. Leduc had 13 goals and 12 assists in 40 games with Langley this season, his third in the BCHL. McCoy is in his first season in the BCHL and has posted nine goals and 11 assists in 39 games.

Riv bring in goalie Mor from NAHL

The Rivermen added to their depth in goal on Thursday, acquiring Jonathan Mor from the Minnesota Wilderness of the NAHL. The 19-year-old was 3-5-0 in 12 games with the Wilderness this season, posting a 4.20 GAA and an .868 SV%. He spent the 2018-19 season in the USHL split between Youngstown and Omaha.

Merritt unloads defenceman Werenka to Spruce Grove

The Merritt Centennials continued to build for the future on Thursday, this time sending defenceman Olson Werenka to Spruce Grove of the AJHL for future considerations. Werenka is a veteran of 126 junior A games with the Centennials, Salmon Arm, Trail and Bonnyville of the AJHL over the last three seasons. He had three goals and 14 assists in 31 games in Merritt this season.

Kings defenceman Garrett commits to Colgate

Amidst all the player movement on Thursday, Powell River Kings defenceman PJ Garrett announced his commitment to Colgate University. Garrett has three goals and eight assists in 39 games with the Kings this season, his first in the BCHL. He is slated to attend Colgate this fall or in 2021.
